David Huw Jones

David Huw Jones was born in Carmarthen, South Wales in 1949.  He studied art at Carmarthen Art School and Bristol University in the late 1960’s.   Thereafter he qualified as a teacher a career he followed for 30 years until retirement in 2002.  He was Head of Art at Eggars’s School in Hampshire, King Edward VI School and Brentwood School both in Essex.

To the present day Jones has always pursued his life as an artist with dedication and rigour and to that end he has had numerous mixed and “one person” exhibitions.  After many years of experimenting with ideas and materials Jones has concluded that his work is fundamentally motivated by deep psychological forces which he feels have shaped his life rather than any aesthetic or material concerns. Distant memories, fleeting moments in time, chance encounters, unexpected discoveries, unforeseen events and strange coincidences permeate all his work.  His fascination with passing of time can be seen in his recent work which is a monumental installation painting depicting the history of England.  Jones believes that history is a construct of the mind and he describes the work as a dream like journey through time. In this piece he uses surreal images of human faces rather than abstract shapes.
